The House at Valerian Corner

Like the poppy field now sadly fading, I'm sure the house at Valerian Corner was brighter last year.

Where is Valerian Corner? It's on my running routes that go through Farndon Village, a modern house with an old outbuilding with a cat weathervane upon it. In summer, the verge outside it burns with red valerian, attracting bees and on one memorable day, a hummingbird hawk moth.

Normally when I pass it, it means I'm on the way back into town after a long country run, so it is a welcome sight. A beautiful one at this time of year.

Usually when I pass it, Rumbles Cafe and a cup of tea is about 15 minutes away!

  1. Ah valerian! I see it growing all along the roadsides here and I've been trying for ages to get a correct ID, so thank you Si! Love the shot of the bumblebee on the flowers too, and so cool you spotted a hummingbird hawkmoth too! - Tasha

  2. A wonderful sight Simon - I love Valerian. Saw a pretty white variety when on holiday in Devon. We have some in the garden and pollinators just adore it (last year we had our first Hummingbird Hawkmoth - still feel over the moon whenever I remember the sighting!!) :)

  3. Thank you so much! It would look better on a sunnier day - and with a bit of saturating of the image!

  5. I love valerian Si - particularly the red one. But when I suggested to a friend that I got some for my garden she shrieked in horror, saying that it was a) invasive and b) attracted rats???

  6. Rats???? How odd. It's a native species attractive to pollinators isn't it? I don't know to be fair.
