And we are Playing Cricket Again

I say "we are playing cricket again" but that refers to the club. I'm not playing cricket yet because I don't want to share car transport with anyone. I am scared. I am chicken.

However I am playing for us at home tomorrow, where my bowling will be very socially distanced from the batsmen.

I went down to watch our first team today, a grey, mizzly day with the wind funnelling down along the bypass as usual on our wide open second ground.

The league is essentially a regionally based 7 game shootout with semis and a final afterwards, which leads to higher division teams playing lower ones, as happened to our firsts today as they took on Bingham.

It was always going to be a tough game for us, but we got stuck in with the ball, our 15 year old first team debutant taking 5 wickets in fine style. most of them castled. No one was battered to all parts, although that was tricky on our ground, as the boundaries cause the pitch to be about the size of a Soviet Central Republic.

Unlike myself tomorrow, no-one looked rusty or injured like I probably will tomorrow. Bingham were just a bit too good in all areas. They scored 211 without ever looking like they were forcing the pace, and their fielding and bowling were very sharp as they kept us to about 120 for 9 in 40 overs. Our new first teamers had good games though, and no-one seemed too disheartened.

On the nature front, because one has to combine nature with cricket, our ground for some reason has a dead crow in a water tank belonging to a farmer, and the borders are full of hairy willow herb, marsh woundwort and the two species of bindweed. Mare's tails are also growing in the dyke at the bottom of the ground.

So tomorrow I make my seasonal debut. And I'm sure I'll be terrible. But that's what you read my cricket blogs for.

Si

  1. That sightscreen looks as though Ben Stokes has targeted it with some of his straight drives. I don't know what it is with crows but they seem to be particularly careless around water; when I worked on the farm they often found their way into water tanks at this time of year. I presume they are young birds.
