However, after a long time lying on my back trying to line up holes with other holes, and awkwardly screw in hex screws, I did manage to get the thing up and put books on it without it collapsing.
I have sorted out a few plants for my little yard, but as you can see from the photographs it's a bit bare and flinty.
I am wondering how I can make a nice little nature garden at low cost and hassle level!

ReplyDeleteNice little space you have there and the gravel is a good start. I would find room on the wall for one of those wooden things with holes for insects to go in in Winter - apart from their use they are also quite decorative.
I would also have a little statue (perhaps a collective Christmas present?). You have made a start with pots and they look good - like the fern idea - and go a garden centre - they will tell you plants that attract insects - I just buy one at a time then I don't miss the money I spend. Good luck
The plants you can grow depends on how much sunlight the garden gets. From my experience with my own small back yard you can get away with less sun than the experts recommend. Mine only gets direct sun but happily grows anything needing "full sun", I imagine that's because the walls provide shelter and also reflect back some of the sunlight. In a small space it's best to have at least some plants that flower for most of the summer so there's always at least a splash of colour; things like petunias and pelargoniums will flower from June right through to September and grow well in tubs or wall-baskets.
